FIRE safety officers are warning people to check their electric blankets as winter sets in.
Dave Bennett, head of community safety at Cleveland Fire Brigade, said yesterday: "The winter weather is now upon us.
"People may be tempted to use an electric blanket which has been stored away during the summer months without checking that it is still safe.
"The consequences could be disastrous.
"Last winter, we were called to four house fires that were caused by electrical faults in electric blankets and four people were taken to hospital as a result.
"We need to get the message across that an electric blanket which is used improperly could become a nightmare for the user.
"As with all electrical equipment, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using an electric blanket.
"Check to see if you should switch off your blanket when you get into bed and once your blanket is out of guarantee have it serviced each year."
Tips to ensure an electric blanket is safe include keeping it dry and flat, and ensuring that it carries the British Standard safety kitemark.
