MP Alan Milburn met people with learning difficulties yesterday, to discover what difficulties they face in modern society.

The Secretary of State for Health visited United Response, in Darlington, and talked to them about their views on the challenges they face.

The MP recently published the first White Paper for 30 years on learning difficulties, and was keen to hear opinions of people in his local constituency.

Manager of the support team Gail Dawson said: "It was an excellent opportunity for Mr Milburn to find out how people want to contribute to, and participate in, their local community.

"We were delighted that he decided to make the visit and we are sure that everybody learnt a lot from meeting each other.

"We wanted to discuss the challenges facing people with learning difficulties and to see how the principles of the White Paper were going to be put into practice. It was a very positive meeting."

United Response is a national organisation creating opportunities for people with learning difficulties or mental health problems. The team, in Barton Street, provides 24-hour support so that people can live in the community with maximum independence.

It also works with families and carers in supporting their relative or friend to live as they want to. It works with local agencies, to provide outreach services and help people to learn new skills.

Support workers also provide placements, matching people to a supportive household to live in.

United Response is keen to work with local people and businesses to develop and improve the services it provides.
