THE first permanent gallery devoted to the history of Newcastle opens at the city's Discovery Museum this weekend.

Newcastle Story, part of the first phase of the museum's £12.2m redevelopment, is a walk through the reconstructed streets of Newcastle from Roman times to the present day.

The gallery begins at the Roman version of the Tyne Bridge, and each subsequent period is separated by a gate.

The museum's most popular exhibit, Turbinia, will be on display once more after more than a year in dry-dock.

Built in 1894 to test and demonstrate the advantages of using the steam turbine to propel vessels through water, the craft has remained in protective housing while improvements were being made to the building.

The redevelopment also features the Science Maze, which includes interactive displays along the length of the building.
