THE future of alternative cinema is looking brighter this weekend after Northern Arts announced £5,000 backing.
Graham Ramsey has been successfully running KINO, Leftfield and Independent Cinema from Around the Globe, since last month, using the University of Teesside's Cinema, in Middlesbrough.
Yesterday, he said: "KINO comes from my long-standing frustration at the lack of cultural opportunities in this area.
"The reality is that this kind of independent cinema wouldn't exist without Northern Arts. Its support and enthusiasm has given me the opportunity to demonstrate that it's not only myself that's interested in watching independent films on Teesside. The Northern Arts grant will provide a strong platform for KINO to run for years to come."
Cornerhouse Productions aims to expand KINO, which is also backed by Middlesbrough Borough Council and the University of Teesside.
Mark Robinson, head of film, media and literature at Northern Arts, said: "Northern Arts is committed to supporting cinema provision in Teesside, and feels confident this will give film lovers new opportunities to enjoy the best in world cinema."
