MORE than 90 per cent of first class mail in the region is being delivered on the next working day - ahead of the Royal Mail's national targets.
With 95 per cent, the DL postcode area, which serves the Darlington area, had the region's best performance, according to July to September figures.
It is followed by the Sunderland area, with 94.7 per cent, Teesside and York, with 93.5 per cent, Durham with 93 per cent and Newcastle, equal to the national target of 92.1 per cent.
Royal Mail's area manager for Darlington, Nick Morgan, said: "These are excellent results, not only for us, but for all our customers, and we are delighted to have done so well."
Six postcode areas in the North didn't meet the 98.5 per cent target for second class deliveries, but Durham, Harrogate, Leeds, Sunderland and Wigan achieved 100 per cent.
Postal services watchdog Postwatch Northern England acknowledged the northern region had been among the country's top performers
