POLICE in Stockton are sending out a simple festive message to thieves, troublemakers and beggars to keep out of the town.
A series of high-visibility patrols are under way and will continue until after the New Year celebrations to ensure shoppers and revellers can enjoy themselves without having to worry about the threat of crime.
Inspector Mick Walker said the aim of the patrols on the street and in the shops, is to try and create a crime-free zone around the town.
Officers will keep in touch with store detectives and security staff to allow information on would-be wrong-doers quickly to be spread throughout the town centre shops in a bid to stop thieves and pick-pockets in their tracks.
Cleveland Police mounted section and the town's closed-circuit television system will also play a part in the operation to monitor activities.
Insp Walker said: "Our message for would-be criminals and people who think crowded streets and shops in Stockton can become their ideal hunting ground is 'you will be nicked'.
"There will be extra officers out and about until January 3. Patrols will run from first thing in the morning to late at night. We want to create a safe and pleasant environment so people can come and shop and enjoy themselves in Stockton.
"Christmas is the season of goodwill - but that does not extend to crooks, beggars and others who prey on society."
