A SEASONAL safety warning has been issued to householders by trading standards officials in Hartlepool.
They are concerned some people do not take adequate precautions when burning candles in their homes.
Michael Welsh, Hartlepool Borough Council's trading standards manager, said: "Candles are very popular and at this time of year there is more danger associated with them, especially when everyone is putting up Christmas decorations and there is a lot of packaging and presents lying around.
"A misplaced or neglected candle can easily start a fire and ruin Christmas for all the family.
"You should never leave any candle unattended or go to sleep when one is lit."
