PLANS to close one road and partially close another have won councillors' approval.
At a meeting yesterday, Middlesbrough Borough Council's cabinet agreed to close the section of Victoria Road between the entrance to Teesside University's estates office and Wilson Street, including Ulla Street and Barritt Street.
It also decided to close Southfield Lane to all traffic except buses up to 7pm, raise the carriageway, install moveable bollards and create turning facilities at either end.
The moves were suggested as a means of making it safer for students to walk around the university campus. But in consultations, residents said there were other, more viable options, and said traffic would only be re-routed to their streets.
The road closures and related work will go ahead with funding from the university.
