An electronics firm has developed a system which will allow voters to choose the next Prime Minister by text message.
The "Council flow" mobile phone software allows users to select options using secure codes.
It was set up by Mediaprom Ltd, of Sunderland, and if pilot schemes are successful the text vote could be in use by the next General Election.
The system allows a server to send out and receive multi-messages to mobile phones.
The text is recorded on a database which can be adapted for any kind of voting system and numbers.
Company director Steve Breeds said: "Voter turnout at elections is getting less and less, and electronic voting methods are already being tested. This system allows people to vote as they move."
The system is being tested by Rushmore Council, in Hampshire, which is using the program to send multi-messages to inform its 15 to 25-year-old residents of community issues and gain their interest.
