ONE of the region's largest superstores reopened this week after a rapid refurbishment which has added an extra 14,000sq ft of retail space.
The Sainsbury's store, on Durham's Arnison Centre, closed on November 26 for the £7.5m refit.
Invited guests were given a glimpse of the new-look store on Wednesday night, and the premises opened for business again yesterday.
Manager Andy White was joined by 25 colleagues who have all worked at Sainsbury's since the branch opened in 1990 in cutting a ribbon to reopen the store.
The refit has resulted in an extra 85 staff being taken on. New features include the "well-being" area, offering new food products for speciality diets, a children's clothing section and a "food-to-go" area for ready-made meals.
