THE leisure service department of Darlington Borough Council has won a charter mark for its excellent customer service.
The award was presented for the customer service provided at all the town's leisure facilities, including the Dolphin Centre, Stressholme Golf Centre and the Eastbourne Sports Complex, as well as the equipment within children's parks and play areas.
An independent judging panel from the Government's Charter Mark and Beacon unit visited Darlington in September to assess the service. They were particularly impressed by the way customers' views and complaints were handled.
Councillor Dorothy Long, cabinet member for leisure, said: "Congratulations to everyone involved. This is a real feather in our cap.
"We have dedicated, enthusiastic employees throughout leisure services who pride themselves on the quality of service they provide for customers, and work hard o make sure that everyone enjoys visiting out facilities.
"It is wonderful to be awarded the national recognition and I know our staff will continue to strive to improve the service still further."
The charter mark will be presented at a national ceremony in London in February.
