VOLUNTEERS are needed to help at two magistrates' courts tea bars over the Christmas period.
The Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) is eager to get new volunteers to run the tea bars at Consett and Newton Aycliffe magistrates' courts.
Josephine Rutherford, of WRVS Durham, said: "As people start to get into the Christmas spirit, now is the time of year to spare a thought for others in the community who need support, such as people who have to visit court.
"Going to court can be worrying for anyone, particularly if they have been through an unpleasant or traumatic experience and need to give evidence or are supporting family or friends.
"So it is important that they can sit somewhere to enjoy some refreshments in a calming environment and our tea bars give them just that - a sense of normality and inclusion at a stressful time."
The WRVS believes students training in law, social care, retail or catering would benefit from volunteering as would anyone wanting to help others.
The tea bars open Monday to Friday, and volunteers provide refreshments to court staff, solicitors, witnesses and other visitors.
Training is provided and travel expenses are paid.
