SOLUTIONS to the region's traffic-logged highways - including setting up road tolls - will be the subject of an exhibition on Tuesday.

As part of the Tyneside Area Multi Modal Study (Tamms), local people are being invited to give their opinions about transport issues in the North-East.

By spring, the Tamms steering group will have finalised its suggestions to problems around the trunkroads in Tyneside.

The study has already identified transport issues such as congestion on the A1 and A19; capacity of the rail network; and damage to the environment.

Andrew Johnson, chairman of the steering committee, said: "Public consultation is vital for us as we continue to develop Tamms.

"Following on from the mobile exhibitions of the first round of public consultations, visited by 4,000 people, consultants have developed possible solutions."

Solutions include increasing spending on public transport, boosting spending on roads, and looking at road tolling schemes.

However, Mr Johnson added: "None of these solutions are set in stone."

The exhibition will take place at the Royal Station Hotel, in Newcastle, from 8.30am to 8pm.
