A rare Neil Wainwright header put Darlington into the third round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Altrincham on Saturday.
Darlington took a 22nd minute lead through Danny Chillingworth and it looked as though the visitors would stroll into the next round with relative ease but Quakers failed to take their first half chances, allowing the hosts back into the tie.
Poor marking at a second half Altrincham free-kick allowed Mark Maddox space to head in an equaliser to gave the Robins hope of an upset.
But five minutes later Wainwright saved his sides blushes with a superbly executed headed goal after which Darlington were never in danger of throwing away their lead again.
However, Altrincham were denied a penalty when David Brightwell appeared to handle in the box but the referee waved play on, much to the relief of the Quakers bench.
