POLICE in Washington are gearing up for the festive season with extra patrols in busy shopping areas.
With goods and large amounts of cash and changing hands in the run up to Christmas, Northumbria Police want to ensure that residents and businesses do not fall prey to criminals.
Crime Prevention Officer PC Dean Thompson said: "Police are now increasing their patrols at shopping precincts, paying particular attention to busy retail and business areas during the run up to Christmas and into the New Year.''
Police are advising shoppers to keep wallets and purses secure and out of sight, keep cheque books and cheque cards separate, and shopping in the car boot so it cannot be seen.
They also advise people to park in well-lit and well-used areas.
They are also urging people to keep their homes secure when they are out, inform neighbours if they are away, keep presents and valuables away from windows, and leave the car in the garage.
For information about setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme call Julie Mills, Neighbourhood Watch liaison officer, on 0191-454 7555 extension 66439 on mornings, or leave a message on the answer machine.
She has a limited number of free ultra violet pens and personal attack alarms available.
