A STROKE victim is learning how to communicate again - thanks to a budgie he has taken under his wing.
Derek Smallman, 71, a resident at Ayresome Court nursing home, in Yarm, near Stockton, Teesside, has been unable to talk since suffering the stroke several years ago.
He became withdrawn and would spend most afternoons in his room - until he met Joey the budgie.
A firm friendship was formed, and Mr Smallman started to make small noises as he talked to the bird.
Joey belongs to Jill Bray, who works as a therapist at the home.
She said: "The budgie was driving me crazy at home, so I thought I would bring it in for the residents.
"Derek loves him dearly, and everyone keeps bringing him in treats for Derek to feed him. Once I saw the improvements in Derek's speech, I knew I could never take Joey home."
