TWELVE people were injured this morning when a double-decker bus hit a railway bridge, slicing off the vehicle's roof.

The bus was carrying 56 passengers when it struck the bridge at Metal Bridge, near Spennymoor in County Durham. All of the injured were sitting upstairs. Police said the bus travelled about 40 yards after hitting the bridge, at 10.30am this morning. Three quarters of the bus roof was ripped off in the crash.

Seven injured passengers were taken to University Hospital in Durham City, suffering minor injuries including whiplash and cuts.

The other five people hurt declined hospital treatment.

A spokesman said the bus, measured by police investigators as being 13.5ft high, collided with the bridge which has been measured as 12ft 9in.
