AN investigation is under way into claims inmates at Durham's high security Frankland Prison watched pirate copies of the Harry Potter blockbuster movie.

The children's favourite is still on show at cinemas around the country but a probe has been launched into allegations prisoners were able to view pirate video copies of the film at the jail.

In the movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, all the lead roles are played by young children.

Yet it is claimed inmates on the notorious C-Wing - which houses sex attackers and paedophiles - were given access to the film.

Yesterday, a Home Office spokeswoman confirmed the claims were being investigated.

The prison is home to some of Britain's most dangerous criminals, including serial killer Harold Shipman, many of whom have televisions in their rooms.

The Home Office spokeswoman said: "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a PG-rated film and there is no reason to launch a full, external investigation because this is not an issue affecting the security of the prison."
