A FAMILY fun day organised by staff at a Darlington supermarket has raised more than £20,000 for the Cancer Research Fund.
The Yarm Road branch of the Iceland store supported the event, at Hurworth Community Centre in August.
Editor of The Northern Echo Peter Barron opened the fun day, which included a charity football match, jazz bands, children's rides, and craft fair. Stagecoach ran a free bus to transport shoppers to and from the event.
The fundraising effort was prompted when a member of staff was diagnosed with cancer.
Colleagues from around the region and further afield made pledges and donations to boost the total.
A total of £21,974 was raised.
Branch manager Stewart Curtis said: "It started off as a local charity event when we got frustrated after a colleague got breast cancer and wanted to help. I'd like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped support the event.
