FREE emergency contraception will be available from a number of chemists from tomorrow.

Already available from GPs, family planning clinics and hospitals, free emergency contraception will be offered at chemists throughout County Durham and Darlington.

Initially, 33 will take part in the scheme, with more expected to join in February.

To qualify, the pharmacists involved had to undergo extra training, enabling them to direct people to appropriate long-term sexual healthcare services.

Anne Everden, pharmaceutical advisor for County Durham and Darlington Health Authority, said: "Pharmacists have been specially trained to provide emergency contraception and advise on safe sex. They will help young people get appropriate advice and services beyond the initial crisis."

Currently, all chemists can provide emergency contraception, previously known as the "morning after pill", but at a cost of £19.99, which experts believe may put it beyond youngsters' reach.

Sue Everton, teenage pregnancy co-ordinator for County Durham and Darlington, said: "This new service has been implemented to help people who may be at risk from unintended pregnancy. It is not recommended as the contraceptive of choice."

The initiative follows the success of schemes in Manchester and Lewisham. Details of chemists involved are on the website www.health-promotion.org.uk
