POLICE are urging people to crack down on crime this Christmas by keeping their homes secure and presents hidden.
Last December, more than 700 house burglaries were reported in the Cleveland area.
This year, Cleveland Police's crime prevention officer, Gerry McBride, is advising people to take some simple steps to ensure their homes are less vulnerable.
He said: "It is best not to put gifts under the tree too long before Christmas, as the longer they are on display the more opportunity there is for burglaries to take place.
"And, as an increasing number of people spend Christmas away from home, it is important to take precautions before leaving."
He said those going away for the season should ask a neighbour to check their house.
"Supply them with a key so they can take your post in, put the rubbish out on the right day and open and close the curtains," he said.
"It is also a good idea to set a timer switch for a light to go on in a front room to give the impression that someone is at home."
Officers will distribute 5,000 leaflets this week explaining how to cut Christmas crime.
