BOGUS callers tricked their way into a pensioner's home in what police have said was a "despicable" crime.
The two men told the 78-year-old woman that they needed access to her home in Wolsingham, because the house next door was flooded and they needed to switch off the water supply.
When she asked for evidence of identification, the men told her that they did not have time and needed to gain access to her home urgently.
While one of the intruders kept her occupied by checking her kitchen taps, the other searched the upstairs rooms and stole a substantial amount of cash, a man's gold pocket watch and chain and a woman's gold gate bracelet.
One of the thieves was described as white, aged about 26, 5ft 8in, of slim build, with a North-East accent. He had dark brown, curly hair and was wearing a light bomber jacket with a zip, and dark trousers.
The second thief was described as aged about 17, white, 5ft 6in, and of slim build. He also had a North-East accent, and had short, dark hair. He was wearing a dark round-necked jumper and dark trousers.
A dark Peugeot car was also seen in the area at the time of the theft.
Detective Sergeant Kieran Reed, of Crook CID, said police were examining similar thefts in the Wear-Tees area to establish possible links.
He said: "I urge members of the public to ring me with any information in respect of this despicable offence."
