work to preserve military headgear dating from the Napoleonic and Crimean Wars is under way at a North Yorkshire museum.
Textile conservator Caroline Rendell has been called in to clean and repair hats in the extensive collection at the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond.
Ms Rendell, whose work is part-funded by a grant from the Yorkshire Museums Council, will also be helping to enhance officers' waistcoats and a military-style dress.
Among the exhibits she will be treating is a cocked hat which belonged to Surgeon Clarke, a member of the Green Howards from 1795 to 1816.
Her work is part of the annual conservation programme undertaken by the museum when it closes its doors in December and January.
Curator Roger Chapman said: "Caroline's work, with its generous funding from the Yorkshire Museums Council, will help preserve more of our collection of more than 80 historic uniforms and headgear for future generations."
