AN ATTACKER who bludgeoned two friends with the metal end of a table leg has been jailed for life.

Joseph McArdle, 54, was left close to death, and Anthony Lavery, 36, was brutally beaten during the assault by Colin Bell.

The attack happened after Bell joined in a drinking session at Mr Lavery's home in Park Villas, Leadgate, County Durham, on May 15.

An officer who arrived at the scene said: "it was the most gruesome I have witnessed in my 30 years' experience."

Michael Hodson, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court: "This is a case where the prosecution say the defendant bludgeoned Joseph McArdle half to death."

Mr Hodson described how Bell attacked Mr McArdle with the table leg while he sat on the sofa, before throwing him to the floor and kicking him

He then turned his attention to Mr Lavery.

"Lavery said he tried to escape out of the window and a cup was smashed over his head," said Mr Hodson.

He said Mr McArdle nearly died from his injuries, which included fractures to his skull, cheekbone and sinus bones, and internal bleeding. Mr Lavery suffered 28 injuries and both men are still suffering the after-effects of what Judge Esmond Faulks described as a "prolonged and extremely violent assault".

Bell, of Alder Grove, Leadgate, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing grievous bodily harm.

Because of a conviction in 1985, of causing grievous bodily harm, he was subject to an automatic life sentence.

Judge Faulks said Bell presented a "serious and continuing danger to the community".

Brian Mark, in mitigation, said: "Nothing I can say excuses its savagery. He completely lost control.

"They did nothing to deserve it and did nothing to provoke it.
