BUSINESS Link County Durham has received a £400,000 boost to help businesses suffering from the after effects of the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The money comes from £1.5m pot assigned by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to tackle the problem, and is on top of the £500,000 already allocated by regional development agency One NorthEast.

Grants can go to independently owned businesses employing fewer than 50 people to help development and diversification.

Jayne Graham, managing director of Business Link County Durham, said the organisation had been at the forefront of local efforts to help businesses affected by the impact of foot-and-mouth on the regional economy.

"We have already distributed considerable funds to assist in regenerating the business community, in addition to providing practical advice on crucial issues such as diversification, marketing and financial management, to ensure companies survive the hard times.

"The decision to earmark a further £400,000 in financial support for affected businesses is fantastic news. It is expected that immediate priority will be given to companies that have not received previous assistance through the Business Recovery fund, who can demonstrate that they have been significantly affected by the epidemic."

Business improvement grants are available to help businesses diversify through production planning, infrastructure improvements, and skills development and marketing.

Mrs Graham said: "These grants will open up significant opportunities for businesses in the region."
