Angry politicians are asking holidaymakers to boycott Greece in protest at the country's failure to hold a proper inquiry into the death of a North-East man.

Eighteen months after Chris Rochester, 24, died while on holiday in Rhodes, his parents have yet to find out who is responsible.

When a promised report by the Greek minister for justice failed to materialise last month, the Chester-le-Street couple enlisted the help of North Durham MP Kevan Jones and MEP Stephen Hughes.

The MPs have now joined forces with mother and step-father Pam and George Cummings for a day of action on Saturday, December 29.

They plan to leaflet potential holidaymakers outside travel agents in Chester-le-Street's Front Street, warning them of the potential perils of travelling to Greece.

MP Kevan Jones, who recently brought up the Cummings' fight for justice in the House of Commons, said he understood the family's frustrations.

He said: "We are raising concerns that holidaymakers should seriously think about it before flying off to Greece.

"After what appears to have happened to Chris Rochester, I know I wouldn't want to be treated in Rhodes Hospital.

"It's nearly 18 months since Chris died, and Pam and George have been getting nowhere with the Greek authorities.

"They seem to have the manana attitude - it will get done tomorrow. But it never is.

"If people are going on holiday to Greece, they should have the confidence that their health care will be comparable to ours - unfortunately it is not."

This latest campaign comes after North Durham Coroner Andrew Tweddle ruled that Chris died an accidental death, contributed to by neglect.

Mr Tweddle raised his 'great concern about the standards of medical care' in Rhodes.

His family have been involved in diplomatic moves against the Greek authorities since it emerged that Chris' body was flown back to Britain without one of his kidneys.

Mr Cummings said: "The Greek authorities seem to think that if they do nothing we will eventually go away. The minister of justice's report is probably in a drawer somewhere gathering dust, while they hope to run us down.

"But they have picked the wrong people this time."
