Newcastle staged a second half fightback on Saturday to turn around a 1-0 deficit and move into third spot in the Premiership.
A strangely lethargic start form the Magpies may have been caused by Wednesday nights exertions at Chelsea in the Worthington Cup and a lacklustre first half performance saw Rovers go in one up.
The goal came from David Dunn after a speculative 25-yard effort from Tugay deflected off the body of Shay Given onto the bar, leaving Dunn to bundle home.
The half-time introduction of Kieron Dyer brought the crowd to life but it wasn't until Lomano Lua Lua came on after 59 minutes that Newcastle really started to threaten.
Soon after, Lua Lua was instrumental in Newcastle's equaliser, playing the ball to Nolberto Solano, who fed Oliver Bernard on the edge of the box for the Frenchman to fire home his first goal for his club on 66 minutes.
Three minutes later it was 2-1 when a cross from Robbie Elliott fell invitingly to Gary Speed who looped a header beyond a stranded Brad Friedel.
