CAMPAIGNERS have taken to the ice in their bid to restore a permanent rink in County Durham.
Fans of the former Durham Wasps ice hockey club were joined by figure skating enthusiasts for an evening on Spennymoor's temporary ice pad.
Supporters of the Keep Durham on Ice campaign booked the outdoor rink on Thursday to highlight their cause.
Ice sports' enthusiasts have called for some form of ice facility in the Durham area since the demise in 1996 of the Riverside Rink, home of the Wasps and several successful local figure skaters.
Richard Endean, who has organised meetings to keep the campaign in the public eye, said Thursday's "skate-in" was another means of highlighting the traditional support for ice sports in Durham.
The ice hockey fans were joined by two former Wasps players, John Hutley and Peter Herkes, and figure skating coach Christine McDonagh.
Mr Endean said: "It's just another chance to show the demand is there for an ice rink in Durham."
