COUNCILLORS will today decide whether to let pubs and clubs in Darlington extend their opening hours over the New Year.
Members of Darlington Borough Council's licensing committee will discuss three applications during a meeting at the town hall this afternoon.
The applicants are from Humphry's, the St George Hotel, and the Mardi Gras nightclub, which have asked for an extension of their licences into New Year's Day.
Humphry's wants to extend its licence from 11pm to 3am. The St George Hotel is applying for an extension until 12.30am, and the Mardi Gras has requested an extension until 4am.
The council decided to hold a special meeting to deal with the applications after the Government passed the Special Occasions Licensing Order on December 7.
The order means that pubs and clubs can open between 11am on New Year's Eve and 11pm on New Year's Day and sell alcohol.
But any landlords wanting to extend their licences are still required to apply to the council for permission before they can do so
