MIDDLESBROUGH football club's scoring success for the remainder of the season could help a charity towards its goal, thanks to a North-East jeweller.
Bradleys Jewellers, which has six branches across Teesside, has pledged to give £25 for every goal the Boro scores to the Clarke Lister Brain Haemhorrage Foundation.
The appeal was set up by Carole and Brian Lister, of Peterlee, east Durham, after their ten-year-old son died from a haemhorrage five years ago.
The couple were devastated by their only son's death and refused to accept the lack of an explanation as to how this could happen to a healthy youngster.
Since then they have set up the appeal, initially with a £100,000 target, to fund research, but now the aim is to raise £1.2m, not just to pay for further research, but also to set up a support network for survivors and their families.
Peter Bradley, of Bradley Jewellers, said yesterday: "It is such a worthy cause and I have pledged a minimum of £500. However, let's hope that Middlesbrough does really well and it costs me a lot more than that."
Fundraising for the appeal is ongoing, and, at present, the coffers are being boosted by the sale of a joke book.
The Best of Goffy's Ten Grand Gags, which is endorsed by Century FM presenter Paul Gough, is available at branches of WHSmith, Waterstones, Threshers, Victoria Wine stores, John Barrass pubs, and Dewhirst Factory shops around the region.
