THE proposed closure of a town's courthouse has prompted a fresh wave of complaints from community leaders.

Richmond Magistrates' Court has been earmarked for closure as part of a major review of the justice system in North Yorkshire. The plans have sparked anger among the community - and Richmondshire Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) has added its voice to the protests.

Chairman Carl Les said: "We see this as yet another erosion of services in a rural area and we must resist it. Value for money is important, of course, but sometimes cost is not the only issue. Certain local services must be delivered locally to be effective."

Acting bureau manager Leanne Thompson said: "It is only right that the bureau should oppose plans that will adversely affect the community. Many of our clients are already at a disadvantage - this will compound their problems."
