SIX youngsters from Thornaby are celebrating after being awarded the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for their outstanding contribution to the community.
Vicky York, Susan Badger, Claire Orah, Lydia Smith, Dana Rodham and Louise Armstrong, who are in year eight at Thornaby Community School, were chosen for the award because of their commitment and work in supporting others through fund-raising and awareness raising.
The group took part in a series of competitions of Blind Bowling and raised almost £300 for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
The award was launched in April 2000, to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions made by many secondary school pupils to their schools and communities.
Maureen Henry, deputy headteacher at the school, said: "These students should be very proud of themselves, as is the whole school, at receiving this award.
"It's an accolade to their enthusiasm and commitment to their fundraising efforts."
