Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue Team is looking for recruits with basic hillcraft skills.
Training in hillcraft, mountain rescue and first aid will be provided in a one-year probationary period before successful applicants are sent on call-outs.
Team leader Alan Best said: "Call-outs are in semi-urban areas as well as high fells, team members can live anywhere in the county."
The team is holding an open evening at the rescue centre, behind Barnard Castle police station, on January 9, at 7.30pm. Team members will be available to speak to visitors.
Anyone interested in attending the open evening should contact the rescue centre on (01833) 630999 and leave a message with a contact number.
