A FREE festival of walks is being held to allow people to tone up for the New Year while enjoying the great outdoors.
The Ramblers' Association's 12th Festival of Winter Walks runs from tomorrow until January 1, and includes more than 450 walks nationwide - 11 in Northumberland and Durham.
They range from hikes for experienced walkers to more gentle strolls for novices.
All explore aspects of the countryside and promise health benefits. Those who decide to join the Ramblers' Association will be offered a 20 per cent seasonal discount on membership.
Local area chairman, Terry Pollard, said: "The Festival of Winter Walks is a chance for everyone to get out and enjoy the countryside again, spend time with family and friends, and meet new people."
The festival is supported by leading outdoor clothing company, Regatta.
