A WOMAN is in a critical condition with a fractured spine after an accident on the A66 near Barnard Castle, County Durham.
The accident happened on the eastbound dual carriageway of the trans-Pennine route, three miles east of Bowes, at about 6.50pm on Thursday.
It involved a black and white Ford Iveco articulated goods vehicle, which was stationary in the nearside lane.
Police said traffic had stopped because of an animal on the road, possibly a cow or bull.
A white Rover car travelling east collided with the rear of the goods vehicle.
The driver of the truck was a 35-year-old, from Ormesby, Middlesbrough, who was uninjured apart from shock.
The Rover driver, a 51-year-old woman from Sedbergh, in Cumbria, sustained multiple injuries including a fractured spine.
She was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where her condition was last night described as critical but stable.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the accident investigation unit on 0191-386 4929.
