CHRISTMAS Day will be extra special this year for a couple who are celebrating their sapphire wedding anniversary.
Leslie and Doris Smith, both in their eighties, of Sidlaw Avenue, Chester-le-Street, were married at Fawcett Hill Methodist Church, Craghead, 65 years ago, on December 25.
They met at the age of 15 when they were both members of the Salvation Army's singing company. Seven years later, they tied the knot.
Former office worker Mrs Smith said: "We have loved each other all the time.
"We don't believe in falling out. My mother said when we were married 'never let the sun go down on your wrath', and it's something we've stuck with."
Mr and Mrs Smith, who have a daughter, Freda, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, are planning to celebrate the occasion with a family meal out, in Stanley, on December 29.
