REVELLERS have a chance to shed the pounds gained over Christmas by taking a walk in the Wearside countryside.
Sunderland City Council's countryside team will lead people through a brisk eight-mile stroll in the Wearside countryside - and walkers might even learn something in the process.
The New Year Ramble on the Coalfield Way will take walkers around local Hetton landmark Joe's Pond and East Rainton.
There will also be a chance to enjoy a packed lunch - left-over turkey not provided.
During the walk there will be plenty of chances to see local wildlife and take a careful look at traces of local heritage, so people are urged to take binoculars.
Andrew Bewick, the council's countryside officer, said: "This is a great chance for some people to live up to their New Year's resolutions of taking more exercise and getting more fresh air, or simply to enjoy a great day out in the countryside."
Walkers should meet outside Hetton library, Houghton Road, Hetton, at 10am on Sunday, January 6. The walk is expected to last until about 4pm
