THE Yorkshire Dales have been identified as one of the best areas for breeding wading birds in England.
Officers from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds worked with their counterparts in the National Park authority to carry out a survey that confirmed the importance of the area.
Their study revealed that the park supports the biggest number of breeding curlews anywhere in England.
And its population of oystercatchers breed in higher densities than in many other parts of northern England.
Further survey work will be targeted at assessing the status of other upland birds, including snipe and lapwings.
