A MODEL made from craft card and balsa wood has helped to recreate part of a village's industrial past.

Pensioner Bill Colley, from Wear View, Byers Green, near Spennymoor, County Durham, has been making models of the region's industry since 1979.

His latest masterpiece is the recreation of a corn mill that stood in Byers Green in 1420.

The 69-year-old said: "I want to give people an idea of what things were like in the past.''

Mr Colley has made 11 models, all of which he has donated to the archives at County Hall, Durham.

He recently hosted an exhibition featuring the models, which he says have been valued at £19,000 as a collection.

The Byers Green corn mill was on display at the local primary school, where children were able to explore the past.

Mr Colley said: "They really enjoyed it and, hopefully, it will encourage them to go on to create things of their own.
