Police have appealed for a good Samaritan who went to the help of an off-duty police officer who was being attacked, to come forward.

The officer was on his way home through The Garth at Winlaton, Gateshead, at 11.30pm on December 22, when he was set upon by a group of people.

During the assault, a white Citroen Saxo pulled up and man got out and came to break up the assault. He then left scene.
