ELECTRICITY generator British Energy plans to plough £31m into improving the condition of its nuclear plants.
British Energy, which has eight stations in the UK, including one in Hartlepool employing 450 staff, will invest the money over the next two years.
A spokesman said: "There is a clear link between operating a safe and reliable nuclear plant and achieving low-cost generation.
"We have embarked upon a capital investment programme of £31m to improve the material condition of our plants over the next two years."
He added: "We can't say how much will be invested at each particular plant, because it depends on the work that needs to be undertaken.
"However, we envisage that at least £2m will be spent at the Hartlepool Power Station."
