A SCULPTURE created in memory of those who died in the US September 11 atrocities is to be shipped to New York.
Generous firefighters in North Yorkshire are sending the piece, called Ground Zero, to their counterparts in America, with £126,433 they have raised since the terrorist attacks.
The 40in bronze sculpture was produced at York College by Wetherby artist Mike Benn and depicts a patchwork of blank skyscraper windows, with red glass remaining in one.
Mr Benn, who has previously exhibited at York's Guildhall, said the image represented his "remembrance of a day both tragic and heroic".
The sculpture has been handed to Eric Clark, Chief Fire Officer for North Yorkshire, along with the cash, which will go to New York firefighters and their families.
Mr Clark said: "The events of September 11 have touched the lives of everyone.
"The amount of money raised is indicative of the extremely warm and generous nature of the people of North Yorkshire and York.
"I will be very proud to pass Mike's sculpture on to New York."
