A NORTH-EAST MP is backing a selection process which would see more women becoming parliamentary candidates.
At the Women's Conference, in Cardiff, on Saturday, the Labour Party set out measures to ensure that more women were selected as parliamentary candidates - including all-women shortlists.
The party is hoping to have 50 per cent women MPs thanks to its new principles, which have won the backing of Redcar MP Vera Baird.
She said: "This is a major step forward for equality. With so few women MPs, half the population does not have a proper voice.
"I am determined that this move will bring about a change in that. I believe the party must adopt measures that ensure the selection of more women candidates, and I am pleased that a change in the law means this can now happen."
