WHEN year six pupils at St John's CE Primary School, in Darlington, found out about a competition to find the funniest dinner lady, they immediately thought of Sheila Maull.
The contest, run as part of an apple promotion, was seen by headteacher Christine Large, who mentioned it to the children.
To qualify, they had to persuade Mrs Maull to dress up as either William Tell or Sir Isaac Newton, and to amuse them with a good joke.
She agreed, so year six helped out by researching the characters on the Internet and in the library.
They decided on William Tell and Mrs Maull created her outfit.
The children were delighted to find she was a runner-up in the competition, and were all rewarded with a Le Crunch apple to take home.
St John's has recently been presented with an award by Darlington MP Alan Milburn, for promoting healthy eating.
