THE planting of six oak trees launched the Queen's golden jubilee celebrations in east Cleveland this week.
On Wednesday, Councillor Vilma Collins, Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, planted one of the trees, provided by the Tees Forest, in Redcar's Locke Park, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne.
Helping plant two more trees were pupils from St Albans RC School, Coatham CE School and Wheatlands School, Redcar, as well as her three mayoresses, Linda Martin, Barbara Beadman and Chris Ruddock.
Two more oak trees will be planted by representatives from the Friends of Locke Park.
Fifty trees have been provided by the Tees Forest and funded through the organisation's Christmas card recycling scheme.
They will be planted by councillors during the next few weeks in each of the borough's 22 wards.
Coun Collins said: "We believe the day the Queen officially ascended to the throne is the perfect time to start the tree planting. This is also the best time for planting.
"Hopefully, the children who helped with the planting will be able to look back in a few decades time and see how these trees have grown."
