A SCHEME is being set up at a Scarborough primary school to encourage more pupils to walk to school.
Volunteers are being sought to help with the "walking bus" idea at Overdale primary school on the town's Eastfield estate.
Helen Dixon, home-to-schools support worker and the project's organiser, said: "We are looking to recruit up to 40 people to help operate the scheme. They can be parents, grandparents or community-minded people who just want to help".
The scheme involves children walking along a set route, picking up other pupils at designated stops.
Miss Dixon said: "Escorting a line of children on a journey to school will not only be safer but keep the youngsters healthy"
Helpers and children are given fluorescent jackets and all the volunteers will be checked by the police
