NORTHERN farmers battling to overcome the foot-and-mouth crisis have received support from the parent company of the Darlington & Stockton Times.
The Gannett Foundation has presented £2,000 to the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's Farmers' Fund.
The fund was established last March to help Northern farmers whose livelihoods were threatened by the disease.
The society, organiser of the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate - which itself was a victim of foot-and-mouth last July - started the fund with a £50,000 donation. Almost £300,000 has now been raised.
The money was handed to the society's treasurer, Nigel Pulling, by the newspaper's editor, Malcolm Warne, and farming editor, Mike Bridgen.
The Gannett Foundation is sponsored by the owners of the D&S and gave more than $9m to non-profit organisations in 2001 to improve the education, health and advancement of the people who live in communities served by Gannett newspapers.
