Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers - Nine Harriers took part in the Knavesmire Brass Monkey Half Marathon last Sunday on a pleasant morning for running.
The course was mostly fairly flat, assisting good times. The winner of the event was Ian Fisher of Otley AC in a time of 1.06.46 with Ian Malone of Ackworth Road Runners in second place in 1.09.35.
The first Thirsk and Sowerby runner home was Geoff Bullock in 227th place in 1.33.10. Alan Somers was 240th in 1.33.39, William Barker was 350th in 1.39.25, Peter Scanlon was 506th in 1.47.28 closely followed by Nigel Morgan in 1.47.31. The first Thirsk and Sowerby lady was Sarah Somers in 566th place in 1.51.08, Steve Harrison was 660th in 1.57.12, Paul Iley 686th in 1.59.35 and Kaye Mechie was in 691st place in 2.00.18. A grand total of 834 runners finished the very popular event.
Durham City Harriers
Rosie Smith led the Durham City Harriers team in a brilliant team victory at the North of England great North Cross Country championships in Derby.
Rosie who is having another excellent season ran superbly throughout finishing second to another of the country's top junior athletes and in the process beat her arch rival Charlotte Wickham of Gateshead Harriers, who was the defending champion.
Rosie time was 15.31 with fine runs from Joanne Ritson (15th 16.42), Jeni Page (20th 17.08), and Aida Geragusian (39th, 18.19). brought the team home first with 76 points with Sale Harriers second (104 points), and Liverpool Harriers (third (110 points) in the U18 championships over 3.9 klms.
In the Under 15 girls Sarah Davison had a good run finishing 32nf in 15.30, over the 3.5 klm cvourse while Kate Rose 38th (11.41), and Briony Rose 76th (12.23) ran well in the Under 13 girls race over 2.6 klms.
Louise Trainor did very well in the Senior Women's race over 7.4klms finishing 44th in a time of 33.09.
The next social evening will take place on Saturday February 9 2002, at the Salutation Inn, Framwellgate Moor. Members and friends are welcome and tickets can be obtained from Bryan Mackay (0101) 3842039.
