AN ailing Middlesbrough fitness centre has been given a new lease of life after being taken over by a hairdresser.

Kingsway Leisure Club, in Linthorpe Road, is now called Yorke Fitness, the first go-it-alone venture from Bishop Auckland hairdresser Sarah Yorke.

Along with running the gym, Ms Yorke has taken over the hair salon on the premises, which has already undergone refurbishment.

The salon has been gutted and extended and work has taken place in improving the gym with the installation of new equipment and floor strengthening.

"I have always wanted to run my own gym and salon and this seemed an ideal opportunity. We are in an ideal location because the gym and salon is so central, which means we can offer something for everyone," said Ms Yorke.

Improvements have already been made to the bar and public areas of the club, which have been greeted with enthusiasm by members.

Future plans include a creche at the gym, the appointment of a sports physio, and a beauty room in the hair salon.

"We are hoping that all the improvements will not only encourage existing members to stay, but will bring new members in when they see the facilities we have to offer," said Ms Yorke.
