A MULTI-MILLION pound community sports complex is taking shape at a Hartlepool school.
The £2.6m centre is being built at Brierton School. When it is finished, in June, it will provide top-class training and competition facilities for the school and the community.
Trampolining, badminton and netball will be among the sports on offer in the complex, which covers 2,000sq m.
The roof of the main sports hall is in place, with the side walls and the interior dividing walls taking shape.
The school's old sports hall has been demolished so work can begin on a new car park.
More than £1.7m of the £2.6m funding is National Lottery money from Sport England, with the remainder coming from the Owton Rossmere Single Regeneration Budget Partnership, Hartlepool Borough Council and the school.
Headteacher Stuart Priestley said: "The work is progressing very well. The excitement among pupils and staff alike is starting to build, now that the sports centre is really beginning to take shape.
"It's wonderful to think that by this summer, the complex will be up and running and will be a real hive of activity."
John Williams, deputy chairman of regional development agency One NorthEast, said: "Brierton Sports Centre is an important regeneration project, providing an excellent example of how school facilities can benefit the local community."
